ONVI’s Prophix toothbrush will launch with a built-in video camera that allows a user to see within his or her mouth. Claimed to be the first video toothbrush, the Prophix allows users to see how their teeth are faring and understand their oral health through an app that connects via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Android connection is also in the development stages.

Equipped with a built-in camera that captures 1080p video, the Prophix provides users with a live feed that is accessible through its app, giving them an insight into their brushing habits. Consumers can use the video feature to zoom in on one particular tooth or see a shot of three teeth together. The app also captures and saves 10-megapixel photos, keeping a record of the mouth’s condition over time. The Prophix webpage even suggests showing these pictures at dentist appointments to discuss any areas of concern.

“As I used intraoral cameras and monitors to treat my patients, I saw how it helped them to better understand the status of their oral health and, in turn, adopt better cleaning habits,” said dentist Craig Kohler, founder and CEO of ONVI. “With today’s advancements in technology, it is finally possible to bring this never-before-seen dental solution into the home with Prophix.” Dr. Kohler has actually used live video in his own dental practice for over 20 years.

The Prophix also includes four attachments meant to enhance dental health, such as a rubber tip used to massage gums and increase blood flow and a prophy cup for contour cleaning. Sold separately but available in the Prophix Bundle package is a rubber scaler used to remove plaque from lower front teeth. The app provides tips on oral care, helping users employ these tools to their best abilities. Powered by a lithium-ion battery, the Prophix toothbrush has app compatibility with the iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 5.

Now available for pre-order at $299 (or $324 if interested in the Prophix Bundle), the Prophix is scheduled to ship in the first quarter of 2017.
