SMSC Expands Its Ethernet Product Portfolio with High-Performance Switch, PCI Ethernet and USB to Ethernet Solutions
Diversity of Ethernet line demonstrates SMSC’s commitment as a leading supplier of embedded networking technology
HAUPPAUGE, NY, April 9, 2008 – SMSC (Nasdaq: SMSC), a leading semiconductor company providing innovative system solutions spanning analog, digital and mixed-signal technologies, has broadened its portfolio of Ethernet technology solutions with the introduction of several new switches, PCI Ethernet controllers and USB to Ethernet controllers for the embedded market. Now, designers have a single supplier for a variety of networking products designed to work with a broad range of device architectures.
Among these new products are the LAN931x family of multi-port embedded Ethernet switches, the high-performance LAN9420 PCI Ethernet controller and the LAN9500 USB to Ethernet controller, each designed to meet the complex network connectivity requirements of today’s consumer, commercial and industrial applications. These devices deliver flexibility and robust performance and offer customers a larger set of options to choose from when designing Ethernet connectivity into next-generation applications.
“This expanded portfolio of Ethernet devices illustrates SMSC’s commitment to providing value-added networking solutions for consumer and industrial embedded applications,” said Rob Zecha, Divisional Vice President of Marketing – Networking Products at SMSC. “SMSC’s switching products solve the increasing need of audio/video content sharing in the connected home using Ethernet networking connectivity between consumer electronic devices. Also designed for low-cost connectivity to a network, our USB to Ethernet controller offers system designers a flexible means of Ethernet attachment using a standards-based USB interface.”
The new LAN931x family of embedded Ethernet switches supports the ever-increasing growth of networked devices in home consumer electronics. These devices supply system designers with two- and three-port switching technology to solve network connectivity requirements using both 16 and 32 bit non-PCI and MII interfaces. In addition to its feature-rich switching capability, SMSC has taken an active role in supporting industrial applications by incorporating the IEEE1588 Precision Time Protocol into its switch for time critical applications.
In response to the increasing trend of PCI in embedded applications, the LAN9420 PCI MAC/PHY Ethernet controller integrates SMSC’s scatter-gather based DMA engine to give embedded system designers a high-performance controller option that reduces overall processor loading.
Leveraging its vast experience in USB and Ethernet technology development, the LAN9500 USB to Ethernet controller allows developers to deliver Ethernet connectivity while leveraging the proliferation of USB 2.0 technology. In addition to the LAN9500’s small form factor, SMSC’s system solution provides designers with an attractive BOM by minimizing the number of external components needed.
Availability:
SMSC’s LAN931x Ethernet switch and LAN9420 Ethernet controller devices are both available in a 128-pin VTQFP (14x14mm) package. The LAN9500 USB to Ethernet controller is offered in a 56-pin QFN (8X8mm) package. All devices support both commercial and industrial temperature ranges. Samples are available now with production supplies expected in the second half of 2008.
