Socket takes 1-mm pitch BGAs to 10 GHz

For use in test as well as field-upgradeable system designs, the SG-BGA-803 socket from Ironwood Electronics  is designed to handle 1-mm pitch, 1,521-ball BGAs (39 x 39 ball array, 40 x 40-mm footprint) that operate at bandwidths to 10 GHz. The socket has the smallest footprint in the industry, supports 10 GHz on all connections, and provides less than 1 dB insertion loss.

With an integrated heat sink and a fan to dissipate 60 W, the socket mounts on the target PCB with no soldering, using supplied hardware. An integrated compression mechanism lets users simply drop IC into the socket, and apply down force using heat-sink compression socket lid. The socket is constructed with high-performance, low-inductance, gold-plated embedded-wire-on-elastomer as the interconnect material between device and PCB. The socket's contact resistance is typically 20 mΩ per I/O, capacitance to ground is 0.01 pF, pin self-inductance is 0.15 nH, mutual inductance of 0.025 nH, and current capacity is 2 A per pin. Operating range is -35°C to +100°C. ($2,388 — available now.)
