Solid-state disk drives are said to be the fastest around
Said to be the fastest available solid-state disk drive for notebook and desktop PCs, the RealSSD C300 uses a SATA 6-Gbit/s interface and ONFI 2.1 NAND flash to garner read speeds of up to 355 Mbytes/s and write speeds of up to 215 Mbytes/s. The 1.8- and 2.5-in.-form-factor drives use 34-nm MLC NAND flash and come in 128- and 256-Gbyte capacities.
The drives take 3.9 W in operation and less than 100 mW in standby. They weigh in at 43 g for the 1.8-in. model and 75 g for the 2.5-in. model, and they can handle shock of 1,500 g for 1 ms. (Ea/1,000: 128-Gbyte, $350; 256-Gbyte, $715 — samples available now; prod qty, 1st qtr 2010.)
