Soundhawk: new wearable tech enhances hearing

Company launches high-tech listening device

Although we seem to be drowning in fitness or health-tracking bands, there are other uses for wearable tech that should be explored—like enhancing or fine-tuning our five senses.  Take a look at the Soundhawk, wearable tech that allows a user to enhance their hearing by “customizing” what they listen to:

The device comes in three pieces: the Scoop, which is the section that is worn in the user’s chosen ear and holds a close resemblance to a Bluetooth, a charging case, and a wireless mic, which uses the charging case as a sort of base. The Scoop component of the Soundhawk is capable of holding a charge for around eight hours, and is app-enabled.

The mic, which can be clipped to your shirt or set on a flat surface , is used for times when the user wishes to focus on sound from one particular source. It can make it seem as though somebody talking as far as 35 feet from you is whispering straight into your ear.

So far, the Soundhawk seems like a fine-tuned hearing aid—it’s the device’s accompanying app that really makes it an impressive bit of wearable technology. The app comes pre-equipped with four listening settings that engineer the best sound for the acoustics of their particular environments, be it dining, driving, indoor and outdoor.

Users can also use it to personalize and change the sound and sound quality they are hearing based on their environment. You can adjust the bass, pitch and frequency of your Soundhawk to perfectly suit your hearing preferences.

According to Soundhawk CEO Michael Kisch on Mashable, the company’s device was designed for specific instances where it may be hard to hear, such as a packed restaurant or crowded event hall, rather than those who have hearing impairments.

If you’re interested in the Soundhawk you can preorder it here for $279.
