For example, the report looks at why gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors are a viable alternative to LDMOS in power amplifiers for RF designs. These GaN devices can handle high power levels, operate at higher frequencies and deliver superior linearity, which makes this wide bandgap (WBG) technology highly suitable for RF applications. As a result, the adoption of 5G networks is fueling demand for RF GaN devices because they can enable higher data rates and spectral efficiency at higher radio frequencies. They are now widely used in applications such 5G base stations, radar systems and satellite communications.

The report also covers the RF and power design challenges in 5G networks. Although higher bandwidth, lower latency and higher energy efficiency for applications like enhanced mobile broadband, massive IoT and edge computing are benefits for mobile network operators (MNOs), it is causing RF and component design challenges.

Other topics include wireless combo chips to meet a variety of radio communication standards, GaN-on-Si for RF designs and RF energy harvesting. The report also looks at the steps that MNOs need to take to achieve efficiency, power and cost savings and the big demand for experienced RF designers.
