“Smart grid” is the latest trend in the energy sector as utilities look to build out an intelligent grid from the utility to the meter. In nearly all market segments today, an abundance of new data is being generated on a daily basis. In the energy sector’s quest to build out the “smart grid”—where a utility is more intelligently connected to its customers’ meters—utility companies are looking for smarter ways to capture, transmit, analyze and use this information to its fullest extent. Thus, they are connecting machines to machines (M2M) and sites to sites for improved operational efficiencies and intelligence gathering. But, as we all know, advantages frequently come with disadvantages. In this case, such connectivities are likely to create bandwidth and security challenges.
