ST develops entry-level 32-bit MCU

STMicroelectronics has developed an entry-level and ‘affordable’ 32-bit MCU that can be used in cost-sensitive 8-bit and 16-bit applications.

STMicroelectronics has expanded its STM32 microcontroller (MCU) family with the introduction of its “most affordable series.” The entry-level 32-bit MCU, the STM32C0, included in ST’s 10-year longevity program, targets 8-bit and 16-bit applications such as home appliances, industrial pumps, fans and smoke detectors.

The 32-bit design of the STM32C0 delivers performance improvements such as faster response, additional functions and network connection at a similar overall cost and power consumption, while providing entry-level simplicity, said ST. In addition, the free and support ecosystem with resources including tools, software packs and developer communities eases entry into 32-bit development for new users, added the company.

Leveraging the STM32 platform, the new MCUs provide direct memory access (DMA) channels that boost application performance and efficiency, said ST. The devices run at up to 48 MHz and deliver 44 DMIPS instruction throughput with CoreMark performance/efficiency of 114, drawing 80 µA/MHz in run mode.

The STM32C0 series integrates peripherals, including a 1.7 MSPS analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with hardware for 16-bit over-sampling multiple timers including an advanced control timer for applications like motor control. It also includes an on-board, high-accuracy (1%) clock that saves on external timing components.

The STM32C0 series is available in high-volume production. Nine package choices are available, with different options, including ultra-small form factors and low profiles.

Also available are the STM32C0 Nucleo (NUCLEO-C031C6) low-cost development board and two STM32C0 Discovery Kits (STM32C0116-DK and STM32C0316-DK). Software resources include STM32C0 support in the STM32CubeMX configuration tool, Microsoft Azure RTOS and the STM32CubeC0 MCU package with hardware abstraction layer (HAL) and low-layer libraries.

ST will hold a one-hour webinar with a live Q&A on January 31, showcasing the key features of the STM32C0. A demo based on STM32C0 development boards will be included.
