Interplex has launched a family of stackable multi-row board-to-board (BTB) connectors, targeting unstable environments such as the extreme temperature and vibration prevalent in electric vehicles (EVs), particularly for electric power steering and electronic control units. These automotive-grade stackable connectors also can be used in industrial automation systems, transportation hardware, and medical instrumentation.
The connector family’s proprietary snap-in biscuit design enables multiple connector units to be stacked together with interconnections that are appropriately sized, rather than custom built. With this approach, pin count requirements are met using the same basic interconnect platform.
The 0.4-mm miniPLX press-fit pins also eliminate the need for soldering. The pins are constructed using a copper alloy and exhibit very low levels of contact resistance (<1 mΩ). Each pin has a 3-A current carrying capability. An optional coating of these pins withIndiCoat plating technology mitigates tin whisker build-up, preventing short circuits while extending operational lifespan, said the company.
The connectors are available in board stacking heights from 7 mm to 30 mm, featuring between one and six rows and up to 30 contact terminals incorporated into each row. They can withstand high humidity levels (8-hour cycling up to 10% RH), high shock (35 g for 5 to 10 ms across 10 axes), and high vibration (8 hours per axis). They also have an operating temperature range of -40°C to 150°C.
