Study: 90% of drivers would consider purchasing a self-driving car if this one caveat is met

Broad study offers insight on what it might take to get today’s consumers behind the wheel of tomorrow’s self-driving cars

A survey of licensed drivers in the United States revealed nine out of ten respondents admitted they would buy — or at least seriously consider purchasing — an autonomous, self-driving car if it meant they would get an 80% discount on their auto insurance.

Breaking this group down, 34% said that they “very likely” would purchase a self-driving vehicle, while 56% said they would consider it, if such an insurance discount was offered.

Interestingly enough, 20% of those responding to the survey said they would buy a self-driving car without any insurance discount.

The survey was conducted by online marketing research company OP4G for consumer website CarInsurance.com, and revealed several other insights into the mindset of today’s driver and how he / she feels about tomorrow’s vehicles.

For instance, despite the efforts of nonautomotive companies like Google in this field, more than half of the respondents (54%) said they would be more inclined to trust an automaker than a software company to develop these vehicles.

From there, it’s a pretty big drop in trust:

18% said they would trust a driverless car produced by electric vehicle maker Tesla Motors
15% said they would trust something manufactured by Google or Microsoft
12% said they trust consumer product companies like Apple and Samsung

When asked what they would do with their free time:

26% said they would text or talk with friends
21% said they would read
10% said they would sleep

The poll surveyed 2,000 consumers, and has a margin of error of 2.2%.
