Supercapacitor modules deliver high power density

The SCM series of supercapacitor modules from Kyocera AVX can be used in combination with primary or secondary batteries to extend battery life and backup time.

Kyocera AVX has launched the new SCM Series of double-layer, series-connected electrochemical supercapacitor modules. The SCM Series can be used standalone or in conjunction with primary or secondary batteries to extend battery life and backup time.

These supercap modules also can provide instantaneous power pulses in hold-up, energy harvesting and pulse power applications in a range of markets including industrial, energy, telecommunications, automotive, transportation and medical industries. Applications include heavy industrial equipment, uninterrupted power supplies, utility grid, microgrid storage and power shaving, energy harvesting, regenerative energy capture, variable speed pitch control, GSM and GPRS wireless communications, automotive and transportation vehicles and portable medical devices.

Featuring high capacitance, very low equivalent series resistance (ESR), high efficiency, high power density and excellent pulse power handling characteristics, the supercapacitor modules support active cell balancing and withstand high current, high vibration and frequent charge and discharge cycles, according to Kyocera AVX.

The supercapacitor modules offer an operating temperature range from -40°C to 65°C and lifetimes that extend to millions of cycles. They are lead-free compatible, RoHS compliant and compliant with the UL 810A standard for electrochemical capacitors. All devices are tested and qualified for life cycle, high-temperature load life, temperature characteristics, vibration resistance and humidity characteristics.

The first products released in the new SCM family include five part numbers.

  • The SCMA63K586SPPB2 is rated for 16 V, 58 F (+30%/-10%), 5-mA DCL, and 15-mΩ ESRDC. The device is housed in a plastic case that measures 226.2 × 48.6mm (L x W) and is equipped with terminal screws.
  • The SCMA63S586SPPB2 is rated for 160 V, 5.8 F (+30%/-10%), 25-mA DCL and 150-mΩ ESRDC. Also packaged in a plastic case, the device measures 364.5 × 234 mm (L x W) with terminal screws.
  • The SCMZ1EK507STAB2 is rated for 16 V, 500 F (+30%/-10%), 6-mA DCL and 2.5-mΩ ESRDC. It is packaged in an aluminum case that measures 418 × 68 mm (L x W) and is equipped with a four-pin connector.
  • The SCMZ1EP1F6STAB2 is rated for 48 V, 165 F (+30%/-10%), 6-mA DCL and 5.22-mΩ ESRDC. It also is enclosed in an aluminum case, measuring 418 × 194 mm (L x W) with a four-pin connector.
  • The SCMZ85P836STAB2 is rated for 48 V, 83 F (+30%/-10%), 3-mA DCL and 9-mΩ ESRDC. Also housed in an aluminum case, the device measures 418 × 194 mm (L x W) and comes with a four-pin connector.

The lead time for the SCM series is currently 20 weeks. They can be ordered from Digi-Key and Mouser.
