Kyocera AVX has introduced its first automotive-qualified supercapacitors. The five new SCC Series supercapacitors are tested and qualified to the AEC-Q200 standard, which means they can withstand challenging mechanical and electrical conditions common in automotive applications.
Also known as cylindrical, electrochemical, or double-layer capacitors, these supercapacitors are housed in a rugged form factor and offer high capacitance and very low equivalent series resistance (ESR). They also are said to have “excellent” pulse power handling characteristics. They are rated for 25 F and 2.7 V, 100 F and 2.7 V, 10 F and 3 V, 35 F and 3 V , and 100 F and 3 V.
They can be used alone or with primary or secondary batteries to extend backup times and battery life and leverage instantaneous pulse power, said the company. Target applications include electronic mechanical latching, emergency calling, electronic recording, regenerative braking, power, and backup power systems.
The SCC series comply with UL 810A, RoHS and REACH requirements. The operating temperature range is -40°C to 65°C @ 3.0V and -40°C to 85°C with appropriate derating. Depending on the part number, the cylindrical supercapacitors have a 16- or 18-mm diameter and a 30, 40 or 60-mm length.
