Supplying PMICs for Apple

The recent introduction of the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch put many companies who provide parts for these wildly popular products front and center in the news. One of them is Dialog Semiconductor, who is one of many manufacturers that makes power-management chips for the iPhone. However, what isn’t easily seen is how much these manufacturers depend on the Apple for staying healthy. Dialog for example, according to Bloomberg, gets 80% of last years's $903 million in revenue from business dealings with Apple. According to Bloomberg, Dialog says it works with its biggest customer as if it’s an extension to the R&D team. That means they have to be willing to change daily as the customer, like Apple, figures out what their product will be. As you can imagine, most companies don’t want to do that, because it can be quite painful. However, by collaborating so closely on product design, it’s harder for a competitor to replace Dialog, which has seen its sales more than quintuple since 2008. You can see the whole article that reports on several companies that make devices for Apple and what percentage of their revenue comes from Apple.
