Surface-mount module contains
a complete AT motherboard
Total PC compatibility makes development feasible
with common compilers and debuggers
The SMX/386 is a surface-mount multichip module that has everything needed for
an operating PC except dynamic RAM. The module comes with embedded DOS and a
256-Kbyte flashdisk as well as a PC-compatible BIOS, making totally solid-state
operation possible.
The CPU is a 33-MHz 386SX, which has a 16-bit external data path. Its DRAM
controller addresses up to 16 Mbytes. The standard motherboard I/O connections
are all brought out as surface-mount leads.
These include an 8 or 16-bit ISA bus, PC/104 bus, floppy-disk interface, IDE
interface, COM1, COM2, a parallel port, and a keyboard port. A 5-V-only power
source is sufficient.
A development board contains the module, four 30-pin SIMM sockets, and cable
headers for all the peripheral connections. It also has a DIP socket for
flashdisk expansion.
Embedded DOS 6-XL is compatible with the MS-DOS interrupts and file system. It
supports standard desktop software.
To use a monitor, a display controller must be added. Otherwise, an unused COM
port may connect to a terminal. The module also lacks a backup battery for time
and date. (SMX/386, $260 ea/100–samples available now.)
