Switch-mode charger speeds along at 4 MHz

The MAX8903A, a switch-mode dc/dc charger with proprietary Smart Power Selector circuitry, employs a 4-MHz switching frequency to minimize heat and charge time and allow the use of tiny external components. The 4 x 4-mm device includes all the power switches and current-sense circuitry required for charging and switching the load between battery and external power. It suits rechargeable, one-cell Li-ion batteries, making it suitable for smart phones, mobile Internet devices, portable media players, portable navigation devices, digital still cameras, and ultramobile PCs.

The converter on the dc input has a 4.1 to 16V input range for direct charging from USB, ac-adapter, and car charger inputs. The dedicated USB input operates from 4.1 to 6.6 V. The dc-input current limit is adjustable to 2 A, while both the dc and USB inputs support 100 mA, 500 mA, and USB suspend modes. Charge current is adjustable up to 2 A. Other features include thermal regulation, overvoltage protection, charge-status and fault outputs, power-OK monitors, a battery thermistor monitor, and a charge timer. The charger operates with either separate inputs for USB and ac-adapter power or from a single input that accepts both inputs. (From $2.55 ea/1,000 available now.)
