Synthesized function generators are low cost

Two synthesized function generators, the 3.1-MHz DS335 and 15-MHz DS340,
cost only $995 and $1,595, respectively, yet provide good accuracy and
high resolution. The timebase accuracy is 5 ppm over the temperature range
from 20 degrees to 30 degreesC (2 ppm optional); aging is 5 ppm from 20
degrees to 50 degreesC (2 ppm optional). Resolution is 1 μH. Using
direct digital synthesis, both models generate clean (spurious components
less than -65 dBc below 1 MHz) sine, triangle, ramp, and square waves, and
also have a broadband Gaussian noise band. And both models can perform
phase-continuous linear or logarithmic frequency sweeps over their entire
frequency range, with frequency shift keying possible at rates up to 1
MHz. The DS340 differs from the DS335 in two ways. First, it has a higher
operating frequency–15 MHz–and second, it has arbitrary waveform
generation capability–16,300 points (12-bit resolution). An optional
IEEE-488 and RS-232 interface for the DS340 includes arbitrary waveform
composer software for creating arbitrary waveform outputs on any IBM
PC-compatible computer. The generators measure 8.5 (W) x 3.5 (H) x 13.0
(L) and weigh 8 lb. (DS335, $995; interface $395; DS340, $1,595; interface
with software, $495; 2-ppm timebase, $350–30 days ARO.) Stanford
