TDK claims smallest point-of-load DC/DC converter

µPOL DC/DC converters bring highest power density to space-constrained apps

By Carolyn Mathas, contributing writer

Delivering high-power point-of-load solutions sufficiently small for space-constrained applications that need a low-profile power source just got easier. TDK Corp. unveiled a new series of µPOL DC/DC converters that combine a compact size and the highest power density for rapidly evolving applications that include big data, machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), 5G cells, IoT, and computing enterprise.

Last year’s acquisition of Faraday Semi LLC enabled the world’s smallest class of high-power-density µPOL DC/DC solutions. The company focuses on power management through DC/DC power conversion and passive components in advanced packaging technologies such as semiconductor embedded in substrate (SESUB).

Based on Faraday technology, the FS series takes a different approach from traditional side-by-side discrete ICs and discrete inductors by integrating them into a compact solution. Measuring 3.3 × 3.3 × 1.5 mm, they deliver high performance and scalability while minimizing the need for external components and simplifying integration.

The TDK µPOL DC/DC converters are suited for network storage, servers, netcom, and telecom applications.

Features include an output of 1 W/mm3 and operation at a temperature range from −40°C to 125°C.  The family reduces PCB, assembly, and system costs and shrinks board size, offering a 50% reduction in solution size compared with competitive products.

The solutions incorporate high-performance semiconductors in advanced packaging to achieve unique system integration in a smaller size and lower profile by using 3D integration. Highly configurable with multi-time programmable memory, the family offers a wide range of flexibility.

By placing a DC/DC converter close to such complex chipsets as ASICs and FPGAs, the resistance and the inductance components are minimized, enabling fast response and accurate regulation with dynamic load currents.

Rated for industrial application, the µPOL DC/DC converters are lead-free and are RoHS-compliant. Primary applications include network storage, servers, telecom, and, in the future, automotive. Mass production of FS1406 is expected to begin in Q3 2019.
