TDK expands industrial IMU portfolio

TDK has announced the expansion of its industrial IMU portfolio with three new performance-enhanced six-axis devices.

TDK Corp. has expanded its low-power InvenSense SmartIndustrial sensor platform with three new six-axis inertial measurement units (IMUs). All new devices in the industrial IMU portfolio operate over an extended temperature range of -40°C to 105°C.

The new IIM-42653 and IIM-42652-I families of six-axis (3 gyros + 3 accelerometers) IMUs target industrial and navigation applications that require high FSR performance and/or inertial navigation software.

The IIM-42653 can achieve a gyro-programmable digital output of 4000 dps and an accelerometer-programmable output of 32g while delivering ultra-low gyro noise. Key applications include industrial or high-end grade AGVs, AMRs, and drones.

The IIM-42652-I comes integrated with inertial navigation dead reckoning software. It offers a hardware authentication that works with TRACK dead reckoning software from Trusted Positioning, a TDK Group company. The TRACK software, which can be purchased through a licensing agreement, filters GNSS multipath errors and provides a continuous navigation solution even when GNSS signals are unavailable such as in indoor parking garages or warehouses, said TDK.

Other key features include precision measurements thanks to high accuracy and ultra-low-noise sensors and support for a highly accurate external clock input that helps reduce system level sensitivity error, improve orientation measurement from the gyroscope data, and reduce ODR sensitivity to temperature and device-to-device variation.

The IIM-42653 is available now for select early partners and customers and will be available via  distribution partners in April 2023. The IIM-42652-I is now available via InvenSense’s authorized distributors.

TDK also introduced the thermally-stable IIM-20670 six-axis IMU with an extended temperature range and high vibration rectification error (VRE) performance for tilt and stabilization applications. The new industrial IMU targets industrial applications that require extreme stability over temperature and high vibration immunity.

The IIM-20670 can simultaneously measure all six axes with a current consumption below 10 mA under all operating conditions, said TDK. It is calibrated over multiple temperature points and features programmable digital filters and a 10 MHz SPI interface where data integrity can be assessed by a CRC-based error-detecting code algorithm.

Other features include an accelerometer thermal stability of 1.7 µg/C, an accelerometer bias repeatability of 1 mg, and a programmable output of 64G alongside with a tilt algorithm that outputs pitch and roll data over the full temperature range. These specifications enable the new device to provide one of the most stable 6-axis tilt outputs in the industry, said TDK, making it suited for applications such as 5G platforms, industrial tilt modules, and industrial/agricultural drones.

The IIM-20670, housed in a 4.5 × 4.5 × 1.1 mm3 QFN package with wettable flanks, is available now for select early partners and customers. It will be available via TDK’s distribution partners in April 2023.

TDK also offers development and evaluation platforms including the necessary software to develop systems using the SmartIndustrial sensors. The company is demonstrating the industrial IMUs at CES 2023, January 5-8, Las Vegas, NV, in the Central Hall, booth #16181.
