TDK releases online selection tool for PTC inrush current limiters

TDK offers an online tool to help engineers select the right PTC inrush current limiters for a range of power supply and converter topologies.

TDK Corp. has announced a new online tool to help users select the right PTC inrush current limiters (ICL) for a range of power supply and converter topologies. The tool covers TDK’s PTC ICL portfolio offered in 2020.

The selection process is divided into four stages. After specifying the circuit structure (three phase, single phase, or DC circuit) and the capacitor bank’s total capacitance, the developer selects the charging voltage and the maximum ambient temperature. Click search and the tool displays a list of suitable components for the application. If a parallel connection is required, the number of components required is also shown.

The tool provides the key parameters of the suitable components, including package dimensions, rated resistance, heat capacity, and AEC-Q200 approval. It also links to datasheets and where the devices can be purchased.

TDK PTC ICLOne advantage of PTC inrush current limiters is that they are intrinsically safe, said TDK, and in the event of an internal short circuit in the device when it is switched on, the component quickly limits the current to non-critical levels. In addition to their use in converters and power supplies for industrial and household electronics, PTC inrush current limiters are also used in e-mobility applications such as in on-board charging circuits and for the charging and discharging of DC link capacitors in hybrid and electric drives.

TDK recently updated its Magnetic Design Tool with enhanced functionality. It enables fast calculation of application-related parameters for the EPCOS ferrite materials.
