TE Connectivity Showcases Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Solutions from the Vehicle to the Grid at eCarTec Paris

Vehicle battery connection and protection highlighted

PARIS–TE Connectivity (TE), a leader in highly engineered connectivity solutions, exhibits high voltage connection and protection technologies for hybrid and electric vehicles at eCarTec Paris. Through innovative engineering for mechanical, electrical and thermal performance, TE has protected consumers, vehicles and electrical power lines worldwide for over 50 years.

Battery Connectivity

An expert in pushing innovation from one industry to the next, TE leverages its experience in the automotive and high-voltage industries to advance connection and protection solutions for several types of hybrid and electric vehicle batteries.

TE’s cell-to-cell solution eliminates intermediate components creating a safe, reliable connection with a reduced number of electrical interfaces. An optional gasket seal is available. TE’s flexible module-to-module quick connect absorbs vibration and offers variable positioning distances.

Battery Protection

TE Connectivity has been making and supporting relays around the world for almost 80 years selling approximately 1 billion each year to the automotive, aerospace, defense, marine and industrial markets. The switch-on-off function of high-voltage relays is critical to protect the battery and wiring in the high-voltage battery environment. Contact bearing switch-off arcs must be kept as short as possible making the pre-charge relay choice critical.

TE’s high-voltage precharge relay family operates with two arc extinguishing magnets. Its small package and PCB mount or plug-in terminals make it an easy choice for voltage levels up to 450VDC and pre-charge currents and limiting break currents up to 20 A.

Hermetically sealed and intrinsically safe, TE’s contactors/high-voltage relays for hybrid and electric vehicle batteries operate in explosive/harsh environments without oxidation or contamination of contacts, including long periods of non-operation. TE’s family of contactors/HV relays are designed to protect with versatile coil/power connections. Typical applications include battery switching and back-up, DC voltage power.

AMP+ Manual Service Disconnect

Safe, reliable solutions are required to protect service technicians and emergency response teams when working with the high voltages required in electric vehicles. TE’s AMP+ manual service disconnect uses a two-stage lever to open the HVIL circuit prior to separation of the HV contacts. This tool-free solution for disconnecting the internal HV battery pack and protecting the battery pack HV cables from short circuiting is available in a scalable design with a variety of fuse ratings. All HV conducting surfaces on receptacle assembly are finger proof touch safe.

AMP+ High-Voltage Connectors and Headers

AMP+ high-voltage connectors and header designs meet AK 4.3.3, LV215-1 specifications. An integrated internal HVIL optimizes package size and plug and header selections create multiple wire harness assembly routing options.

AMP+ highcurrent connectors and headers, HVP 800, feature current-carrying capability of up to 250 A (continuous) on 50-mm2 wire, a wide temperature range and a wide wire range. The touch-proof, 2- or 3-position, AMP+ high current connectors and headers are engineered with 90 or 180 degree plugs and multiple keying options for use in many hybrid and electric vehicle applications. Assembly is simplified with a lever assist for low insertion force.

Also available is a touch-proof two-position, TE AMP+ low to medium-current connector and header. Under validation for currents up to 40 A at 140°C with a 4 – 6mm2 multicore wire range, the HVA 630 connector and 90- or 180-degree header with multiple keying options are designed for use in hybrid and electric vehicle device applications.

Wire harness routing challenges and smaller packaging spaces are common in high voltage systems. TE’s AMP+ touch-proof, two- or three-position, low-medium current connectors and headers, HVA 280, are designed for flexibility creating many options for hybrid and electric vehicle device applications.

With a current carrying capability up to 40 A at 85°C and a 2 to 4-mm2 multicore wire range, AMP+ low –medium current connectors and headers, HVA 280, can be utilized with mutlicore or individually shielded wire. Options are not limited by the device header; the same interface is used for 2 to 4-mm2 individually shielded wire and multi core wire.

Reduced size and mass are achieved on the HVA 280 through optimized packaging, an integrated HVIL and floating two-stage latch. AMP+ is one product family with over 3,000 low-medium current, high voltage connection solutions gives customers the freedom to select the product that fits their architecture design. “TE is uniquely positioned to supply both high voltage connection and protection products, including high-voltage cable assemblies, to our customers,” said Boris Dieppos, Business Development Manager, TE Hybrid & Electric Mobility Solutions. “TE also has everything it takes to create your charging solution, except the box it goes in. Several of TE’s charging cable assemblies and inlets will be displayed at eCarTec Paris.” To make TE your choice for making the connection, visit the TE in booth at eCarTec Paris, hall 5.1, stand 415 and www.te.com/ev.
