Teach a 10-year-old to build a fully functional BOSE Bluetooth speaker for $150

Company launches build-it-yourself line of product to encourage STEM education

Bose Corporation has launched a new “build-it-yourself” category called BOSEbuild. The purpose of these products will be to encourage children of all ages to explore technology and engineering with hands-on projects.

The first product released under the BOSEbuild brand is “Speaker Cube”, a complete kit that allows children to play around with audio technology while making a fully function Bose Bluetooth speaker.

The BOSEbuild Speaker Cube includes the same high-quality parts and materials used to build the company’s mainstream products. The difference is that they’ll come packaged as separate but easy to put together pieces.

In taking this approach, the company believes children building the speaker will be able to explore and better understand audio technology; this includes such things as how a simple magnet and coil can make sound. Also, how a speaker goes about reproducing music.

Instructions are delivered via a BOSEbuild app, which includes points throughout the steps that encourage the child to stop and play with the part before applying it to the actual building of the speaker.

Additionally, the Speaker Cube comes with colored lights and silhouetted covers to allow the child to customize their speaker to his / her liking. And since the speaker itself is equipped with Bluetooth technology, it easily pairs with any smartphone or tablet.

“Dr. Bose was fascinated with electric trains when he was very young,” says Bob Maresca, CEO and president of Bose. “He learned how they worked by taking them apart and putting them back together, and he had that same insatiable curiosity throughout his entire life. That spirit is still at the heart of Bose. And it's a great example of what we'd like BOSEbuild to offer – fun and relatable ways for kids to make something they really want and can use for years to come, while learning about the incredible science and technology behind it.”

The BOSEbuild Speaker Cube is available for $149. It’s intended for children ages 8 and older.

“We believe in the importance of STEM education,” says Joe Titlow, Head of Sales and Marketing for BOSEbuild. “But learning doesn't just happen at school – it happens in garages and backyards and at kitchen tables, and it starts at a young age. That's what's so exciting about BOSEbuild products. They'll give kids a new way to use, share, and celebrate their imagination and creativity. And we hope that starts a lifetime of discovery.”
