Teledyne e2v unveils next-gen CMOS image sensors

Teledyne e2v’s Emerald Gen2 CMOS image sensors deliver improved electro-optical performance and the flexibility to meet a range of applications.

Teledyne e2v, a Teledyne Technologies company, has announced its next-generation family of global shutter CMOS image sensors, the Emerald Gen2. The new state-of-the-art family offers improved performance and greater flexibility and options to meet a range of applications, including machine vision and outdoor surveillance, as well as traffic detection and monitoring cameras.

The Emerald Gen2 family is available in 8.9-megapixels (MP) (4,096 × 2,160) or 12-MP (4,096 × 3,072), in monochrome or color, and in two-speed grades, standard and high. The high-speed models provide higher performance for applications that require sharp images at very high speeds, such as food sorting, inspection and intelligent traffic systems, Teledyne e2V said.

The CMOS image sensors deliver a 2.8-µm global shutter pixel, designed with the company’s latest generation light pipe technology, which provides up to 67-dB dynamic range in 10-bit and 12-bit ADC mode. “This allows cameras to work in high-contrast scenes without any exposure issues in the images,” said the company.

Other improved features compared to the first-generation Emerald sensors include two output types (LVDS and MIPI CSI 2), low-noise performance with < 3e- readout noise, and increased sensitivity and angular response with dual-light pipe technology. In addition, the sensor’s matrix is centered in a compact 21 × 20 mm² ceramic land grid array (CLGA) package, which fits 1-inch optical formats for easier and more cost-effective integration, according to the company.

“With improved electro-optical performance and the flexibility to choose outputs, this new generation of sensors provides cameras manufacturers with high-performance solutions for a wide range of demanding customer needs,” said Maxime Taupin, Teledyne e2v’s marketing manager, in a statement.

Teledyne e2v will demo the Emerald Gen2 at the International Technical Exhibition on Image Technology and Equipment (ITE), Yokohama, Japan, December 6-8, at stand D-04. Documentation and samples are available on request.
