Production of the Model 3 has been slower than electric vehicle startup Tesla anticipated, but for the first time, Model 3 production (28,578 vehicles) exceeded the combined production (24,761) of the Model S and Model X vehicles in the second quarter (Q2) of 2018. Tesla also reported that the Model 3 weekly production rate more than doubled during the quarter. The company expects to increase production of Model 3s to 6,000 vehicles per week by late August.

Deliveries totaled 18,440 for Model 3 in Q2, with 11,166 Model 3 vehicles in transit to customers at the end of Q2, which will be delivered in early Q3. “The high number of customer vehicles in transit for Model 3 was primarily due to a significant increase in production toward the end of the quarter,” stated Tesla early in July.

The remaining Model 3 reservations at the end of Q2 is about 420,000. As of July 2, Tesla reported that it had delivered 28,386 Model 3 vehicles.
