2016 can easily be known as the year of the drone, and now there’s a chance for drones to become even more user-friendly as the year comes to a close. The AirSelfie, the world’s smallest portable flying camera, is able to slide into a smartphone case when it’s not being used and is currently being advertised on Kickstarter for product delivery scheduled to begin in April 2017.
Selfie drones have grown in popularity this year, boasting features like “petite design” (Zerotech’s Dobby model) and “follow me” capabilities (the DJI Phantom 3 Standard), but the AirSelfie arguably has a user compatibility like no other. Although a smartphone case with this intact will be thicker than usual, measuring at 3.71 x 2.65 x 0.42 in., the case also includes a battery meant to recharge the drone in half an hour. For now, phones compatible with the device are the iPhone 6, 6s, 7, 7 Plus, Huawei P9, Google Pixel, and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Those with another kind of phone that are truly curious in trying out the AirSelfie can try out a separate power bank that charges the drone up to 20 times. The mini drone even has a Micro-USB also used for charging.
The drone has its own Wi-Fi network, which connects to a companion app on users’ phones. If you’d like to snap a picture of you testing out your AirSelfie, there’s a “selfie mode,” among two other flight modes, allowing you to move the drone to the perfect spot for a picture. You likely won’t need to worry about image quality because AirSelfie has 4 GB onboard memory for a 5-megapixel camera and HD-quality video. The drone also flies up to 66 ft. away and can stay in the air for three minutes at a time.
Based out of Milan, Italy, the AirSelfie Kickstarter campaign has a goal of over $45,000 to reach its full potential of manufacturing bigger AirSelfie volumes. Emphasizing the product’s ability to take the perfect shot, the Kickstarter page reads, “How many times have you found yourself trying to fit 20 people or more in that group selfie? We want to share the excitement of finally catching life-size emotions from up in the air with everyone .”
Set to begin full production in December, the AirSelfie team plans a global launch for sometime in 2017.
