The app that makes your phone a virtual bike lock

Bitlock, the future of bike locks, turns your smartphone into a bike lock

By downloading the BitLock app on your smartphone, your mobile device will become the coolest bike lock on the block. With Bluetooth technology, the smart keyless BitLock app will recognize your identity when you’re three feet away from your bike. When you’re ready to unlock and take off on your bike, you simply press the BitLock button on the bike lock, and you’re ready to roll. If your phone dies in the process, your BitLock app automatically generates a 16-digit code for you to manually unlock it.

Can’t remember where you parked? The BitLock app helps you locate your bike using a GPS system. If you’re lost while cycling, the app shows you proper bike routes to take while riding. It records your bike’s locale, and lets you share your location with friends.

You can even set up your own bike-share system community, since you can share the app that unlocks your bike to anyone you choose.

The Activity Monitor feature of BitLock tracks your bike ride, detailing how many miles you’ve biked, how many calories burned, how much CO2 emission you saved and how long the ride took.
Based in San Francisco, Mesh Motion Inc. is still in its beginning stages of producing the Bitlock bike lock. The company is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to help fund its endeavor. To date, the company has raised over $40,000, and hopes to reach a goal of $140,000 by November 14.

The company will ship the first edition BitLock to donors who contribute $100. Those who donate $149 or more will be able to customize their BitLock, selecting the color (red, orange, green, pink, brown, or black).
When the campaign reaches their fundraising goal, the BitLock bike locks will retail for $140, and users will be able to download the app on iTunes or Google Play. As of now, the app is compatible with iOS6, iOS7, and Android phones.
