Photo editing demands top-quality capabilities from laptops, including high-resolution, color-accurate display, and a fast processor. Traveling with photo equipment plus a computer makes smaller, lightweight machines with longer battery lives more highly desired. Storing thousands of high-resolution photos requires a massive hard drive, while top performance is only possible with an SSD.
Let’s take a look at our list of the best laptops for photo editing:
Dell XPS 15
Every year, Dell makes a lighter, smaller, and more powerful version that can be used for image editing. Currently, you can get the base model with an i3 and 8GB of memory for $1,000, but some may want something more powerful. An i7 device with 16GB of memory, a 512GB PCIe SSD, Nvidia GTX 960M GPU, and upgraded UHD touchscreen can be purchased for $2,100. It has a number of ports, including HDMI, USB 3.0, and Thunderbolt. At 4.4 pounds, the XPS 15 is one of the lightest laptops available that is equipped with a nearly Adobe RGB color gamut.
Microsoft Surface Pro 4
If you enjoy using a tablet or stylus to edit your images and want to have access to capability while on the road, the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 is for you. At 1.7 pounds, the device is pretty powerful and features both a keyboard and pressure-sensitive stylus. While the Surface Pro 4 won’t give you the same big-screen experience that larger laptops do, its 12.3-inch screen is sharp with a high resolution. The base model comes with an i3, but you can bump it up to an i5 or i7 for more power. The entry-level model is $900; the packed version costs up to $2,700 with an i7, 16GB of memory, and a 1-TB SSD.
Apple MacBook Pro 15 and MacBook Pro 13
Apple’s MacBook Pro has been a huge favorite among photographers for years. The reason is that it runs the same OS X as it does on desktop computers, and was one of the first to have ultra-high resolution LCDs with a large color gamut in a compact design. And most recently, Apple has made improvements, including adding a Force Touch trackpad, faster SSDs, and better battery life. There’s a newer version expected to launch soon, so you may want to wait for that. However, in the meantime, the current model of the MBP 13 with Retina Display is priced at $1,300, and the 15-inch Retina version is available for $2,000.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon
Lenovo’s 4th generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon is its lightest and more powerful laptop yet. With a 6th generation Core i7 with vPro and ultra-fast NVMe SSD for storage, the newest model supports up to 16GB of memory. Additionally, it includes a fingerprint reader, 14-inch display, and is a much thinner and lighter (2.6 pounds) device. The new X1 Carbon starts at just over $1,100, but can be priced up to $2,000 when fully configured.
Asus ZenBook UX510-4K
Asus’s current flagship laptop, the ZenBook UX510-4K, is most ideal for photographers. At just over 4 pounds, it has a sleek design, a Core i7 CPU, Nvidia GTX 960M GPU, and 16GB of DDR4 memory. It has a 15.6-inch display, a full 4K (3840 x 2160), and covers 100% of the sRGB gamut. A noteworthy feature is Eye Care mode, which reduces harmful blue light by up to 30%. The largest SSD you can get for the laptop is 512GB, although makers may be able to inexpensively upgrade the 1-TB hard drive with an SSD. The device is also equipped with USB-C, USB 3.0, HDMI, an SD reader, and a backlit keyboard.
