The Wheel: A Treadmill that washes your clothes

New Design Concept combines a washing machine and a treadmill

If this design concept becomes a reality, the people of the future are going to be extremely fit. The work of industrial designer Si Hyeong Ryu, the Wheel is a treadmill which uses the kinetic energy generated by running to wash your clothes—a method that’s better both for the environment, and for your own personal health.

The Wheel

The aptly-named design looks something like a hamster wheel, complete with a flexible display screen at the front. The Wheel has several “wash canisters” inside, that can be filled with dirty clothes, detergent and water in much the same way as you would load your regular old washing machine, though the canister’s design significantly reduces the amount of water you have to use.

When you begin to run on the Wheel, the canisters start to spin, agitating your dirty clothes and allowing them to get clean.  Extra power can also be saved on a battery in order to run the washing machine, in case you don’t have time to run every day.

Design Wheel

Whether or not you think a treadmill/washing machine would be useful in your Home of Tomorrow, the Wheel is certainly an innovative design, and it’s definitely one of the more creative uses of the power of human kinetic energy in order to run machines. Si Hyeong Ryu entered her design into the 2014 Electrolux Design Lab, the theme of this contest being “the Home of Tomorrow.” The first place winner will receive a prize of €5,000—roughly $10,000—as well as a six-month internship at an Electrolux global design center.

The Wheel will be competing against concepts such as Pecera, robot fish that clean your clothes, and the Lightsaber Knife, which is kind of self-explanatory. You can find more entries on ElectroluxDesignLab
