This palm-sized 4K camera lets you livestream and edit like a director

The Movi is a video platform loaded with software.

Many of us are familiar with Livestream, the live streaming video platform that allows users to view and broadcast video content using a camera and computer through the Internet. And with the service now comes the camera: the Movi, a palm-sized 4K video camera that lets you edit while you broadcast, and is the company’s first endeavor into consumer hardware.

The Movi isn’t just another standard camera – it comes packed with software that essentially lets you stream and edit like a director. To use the device, begin by placing it where you wish and then launch the Movi app; you’ll need an iPhone as it’s currently only available for iOS. The camera will automatically detect motion and faces in the scene and then present you with no less than nine different shots to choose from, all at various angles and degrees of zoom.

Its capabilities are due to the 150-degree lens and 4K sensor, but are not limited. You may also use basic smartphone functionalities including pinch to zoom, drag to pan, and tap to cut to another shot. The video can be saved on your phone, via a microSD card (a 16GB card is included), or broadcast live which costs $9 for a monthly subscription.

Although the 4-ounce camera is technically 4K, it uses that resolution to give you real-time flexibility, so the actual video recorded is 720p. The Movi also comes equipped with a microphone “array,” although there is no port for attaching an external mic. Its 1,200 milliamphour battery only provides battery power for one hour of streaming, but Livestream does offer a rainproof Movi Pro accessory that allows up to 10 hours of recording.

The tiny camera includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, mounting hardware, and the app is compatible with any device running the iOS 9. Expected to be released in April for $399, the Movi can be found here, ready for pre-order today starting at $200.
