Three-cell supercapacitors operate up to 9 WVDC

Knowles’ three-cell supercapacitors offer higher operating voltages and PCB savings compared to single- or dual-cell devices.

Knowles Precision Devices has announced the three-cell DGH and DSF Series supercapacitor modules, delivering a substantial jump in voltage rating over typical radial-mount supercapacitors, up to 9.0 WVDC. These modules add a three-cell, radial-leaded package to the Cornell Dubilier brand DGH/DSF Series supercapacitors, offering higher operating voltages and PCB savings compared to single- or dual-cell supercapacitors.

Knowles Corp. recently acquired Cornell Dubilier to expand its film, electrolytic and mica capacitor offerings. The new devices provide very fast power discharge and long-lasting performance without degradation. They support brief power interruptions, provide power density for pulse applications and supplement batteries to extend life up to 3×.

Applications include solar and wind energy harvesting, automated guided vehicles, electric vehicles, smart utility meters, IoT, emergency lighting and LED power. They also can be used in applications such as pulse battery pack alternatives, memory backup, battery/capacitor hybrids and UPS systems.

Both the DGH and DSF series offer capacitance values from 0.33 F to 5 F. Multiple devices can be banked for even higher capacitance or voltage. An advantage is their internal cell balancing, ensuring optimal performance. They are also more cost-effective than other options currently available, according to Knowles.

Both series offer high energy density and extremely low self-discharge rates, benefiting energy-storage applications, and are tolerant of wide-ranging operational environments. The operating temperature range for the DGH 8.1 V/DSF 9.0 V is -40°C to 65°C. The DGH 6.9 V/DSF 7.5 V devices offer an extended operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

Low equivalent series resistance (ESR) minimizes energy loss for high efficiency. ESR varies by part but is lower than most capacitors with similar storage capabilities, Knowles said. These supercapacitors withstand over 500,000 charge/discharge cycles, ensuring long-lasting performance without performance degradation. Operating life is expected to be up to 10 years.

The supercapacitors are currently available in distributor stock.
