Tiny 10–A synchronous dc/dc controller integrates digital power control

The newest member of the Programmable Power Manager (PPM) family of ICs, the SMB211 single-channel synchronous dc/dc controller features a serial digital interface and on-board nonvolatile memory for easy configuration during development. The device is reprogrammable in-system by host software.

Tiny 10–A synchronous dc/dc controller integrates digital power control

The controller integrates a synchronous dc/dc step-down converter with digital control functions. Offered in a thermally enhanced lead-free 4 x 4mm 24pad QFN package, the device drives 10-A output using a wide variety of industry-standard MOSFETs. It can operate at 250kHz, 500kHz, 750kHz, and 1MHz frequencies. The device operates directly from an input voltage of 4.5 to 13.5 V, but the external FETs can be powered from voltages as low as 3.3 V. Soft-start and power-on delays are selectable, especially for multiple power-supply applications.

The converter’s output voltage accuracy is ±1%. The device supports dynamic voltage scaling as well as margin high/low control via the serial digital interface. The output voltage can be digitally set from 0.5 to 2.5 V in 10mV steps, or from 1.0 to 5.0 in 20mV steps. The output voltage is monitored for both overvoltage and undervoltage conditions.
