Tiny audio subsystem provides highest output power
Part delivers 725 mW of output power from a 3.7-V supply into an 8-Ω load
Packaged in a 2.5 x 2-mm, 20-bump WLP, the MAX9877 audio subsystem is claimed to be the smallest of its kind while offering the highest output power from a lithium-ion battery. It thus delivers 725 mW of output power from a 3.7-V supply into an 8-Ω load with 85% max efficiency.
This device combines a high-efficiency, high-power, mono Class D speaker amplifier, a DirectDrive stereo headphone amplifier, and a low-noise bypass analog switch. In addition to this integration, the device employs the company’s third-generation, ultra-low-EMI, Class D amplifier technology to provide Class AB audio performance with Class D efficiency.
To further save cost and space, the subsystem uses the company’s active-emissions limiting and spread-spectrum modulation, which significantly reduce EMI and eliminate the output filters typically required by Class D amplifiers. The part also features input mixing, volume control, comprehensive click-and-pop suppression, and a flexible, user-defined input architecture with three preamplifier gain settings. All controls are enabled through an I2 C interface. ($1.62 ea/1,000 available now.)
