functionality of portable devices

Capable of expanding the functionality of portable devices including
PDAs, cell phones, and pagers, the Cyber Display–a 0.25-in. high-resolution
active-matrix LCD with a very-low power requirement–creates a virtual
image that is comparable to a 20-in.-diagonal screen viewed from 5 ft.
Although other manufacturers have produced miniature displays, the Cyber
Display is offered as having the industry's smallest size and lowest cost
per pixel.

The display is based on a proprietary isolation silicon epitaxy process
that produces single-crystalline-on-insulator wafers. The circuits are
then removed from the wafer substrate and mounted onto a glass substrate,
which results in a transparent IC from which the display can be made.

The display provides 1,700 lines/ in. and features a 320 x 240 resolution
with a 15-µm pixel size. Its solid-state backlight module–the Cyberlite–offers
a choice of a white or amber LED backlight, which enables a brightness
of 20 fL for viewing 256 levels of grayscale. Contrast ratio is over 80:1.

To view the miniature display, the user needs the company's Cyber Lens–a
16° field-of-view lens that includes a 3 to 4-in. eye-relief distance.
The lens magnifies the display 12 times creating a virtual image that is
capable of providing 20 times the information viewed on typical mobile
products.

The display includes two analog inputs for positive and negative video,
digital control inputs that accept 3.3 to 5 V, and integrated single-crystal-silicon
horizontal and vertical shift registers for high-speed operation. It supports
interlaced and non-interlaced scanning modes and has a 60-frame/s video
rate.

The complete optical engine, which includes the display, backlight,
and lens measures 17 (W) x 11.2 (H) x 9.9 (D) mm and weighs 6.5 g. Power
consumption is 20 mW for the monochrome display, which operates over a
–10° to 70°C temperature range. Color versions are available
