Tiny, low-cost crypto IC prevents cloning, secures data
The AT88SA102S, is a general-purpose crytpo authentication IC designed to protect consumers from counterfeit electronic and medical consumables, such as batteries, ink cartridges, test strips, and blood bags. The 9 x 2.1-mm–footprint 3-pin SOT-23–packaged device is said to be 40% less expensive than any similar authentication IC on the market.
The chip complements MCUs that include AES encryption, as it can securely store an encryption key for information stored within various bulk memory devices on the system, while the controller can quickly encrypt or decrypt the data using this key. It features an embedded SHA-256 engine and 256-bit cryptographic key along with 23 bits of one-time-programmable fuses that can be used for personalization, status, or consumption logging and a guaranteed unique 48-bit unique serial number. It runs on 2.5 to 5.5 V and takes just 100 nA in sleep mode. ($0.66 ea/100 — available now.)
