Tiny programmable 500-mA battery charger suits single-cell systems
The SMB239, the industry’s smallest charger IC, enables slimmer industrial designs for portable consumer electronics. The 500-mA linear charger uses a programmable algorithm for single-cell Li-ion and Li-polymer cells. The charger IC is offered in a 2.1 x 1.3-mm CSP package and requires two external chip capacitors for a complete battery-charging system.
The charger IC operates with an input range from +4.35 to +6.5–V input and withstands continuous input overvoltage up to +10 V (nonoperating), while protecting downstream circuitry. The device’s reverse leakage current is 2 C/SMBus interface, enabling a variety of algorithms without hardware changes.
The device integrates features to meet safety standards, including IEEE1725, input and battery overvoltage protection and blocking (+10 V), current limit, chip and battery thermal protection, safety timers, battery missing detection, and a variety of status and fault registers. It suits portable devices, including Bluetooth mono/stereo headsets and other accessories, mobile phones, digital cameras, portable music players, portable GPS navigation, and handheld medical equipment.
