Tiny TCO device protects smaller batteries in smartphones

Bourns, Inc. recently released its smallest miniature resettable thermal-cutoff (TCO) devices  that provide overtemperature and overcurrent protection of lithium polymer and prismatic cells. The Bourns Model CB Series  is about 26 percent smaller than the company’s previous NR series with the same current carrying capability.

Although the Model CB devices’ small size (2.5-mm wide with a low-profile 0.8-mm height) makes them well suited for smaller batteries in smartphones and portable electronics, their high current carrying capability also allows them to be used in notebook and tablet PC battery cells.

These axial-leaded TCO devices control abnormal, excessive current virtually instantaneously, according to the company, up to rated limits. Key specs include resistance value as low as 2.2 milliohms, current capabilities from 6 A up to 11 A at 60°C (as well as a welding projection option), and four trip temperature options of 72°C, 77°C, 82°C and 85°C with a ±5 °C tolerance. Other temperature options are available on request.
