Tire pressure monitoring system can turn truck tires into IoT nodes

Designed for trucks and other large vehicles, the FXTH8715 tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) series is said to be the industry’s smallest (7 x 7 x 2.2 mm) and highest accuracy (±17 kPa) fully integrated wireless TPMS. In a single QFN package, the sensor system integrates pressure and temperature sensors and a single- (Z axis) or dual-axis (X and Z axes) accelerometer with an RF transmitter, a 125 kHz low-frequency receiver, and an 8-bit microcontroller (S08 core) with SIM, interrupt, and debug/monitor. Thus system can intelligently collect and transmit pressure, temperature, and acceleration data to enable sophisticated analytics to not only improve fleet maintenance, but also transform the TPMS into value-added end-node on the Internet of Things.

The series also features the highest operating range in the industry: 100 to 1,500 kPa, versus the nearest competitor’s 100-1,300 kPa. The system’s integrated MCU works with the on-board 512-byte RAM and 16-kbyte Flash memory (8k for a dedicated firmware library and 8k for user applications). Further, dedicated state machines reduced power consumption. The storage and state-machine capabilities permit application flexibility, reducing time to market and supporting rolling encryption for a more secure solution. The FXTH8715 TPMS family is available now for a suggested resale price starting at $5.40 ea / 10,000.
