BIVAR and Mouser Electronics teamed up to support racing champion Tony Kanaan, who made history as one of the greatest and most popular drivers with a first place victory in the legendary Indianapolis 500 earlier this year. The partnership helped supply the 2013 KV Racing Technology team with a competitive edge in the pit and on the raceway, with BIVAR LEDs leading the way as a very important role for the pit crew.

Refueling an Indycar with 18.5 gallons of ethanol in only seven to eight seconds is critical to winning a race, but it's also an extremely dangerous activity that requires intense focus. To make fueling Kanaan's number 11 Indycar both quick and safe, his team created a fuel status system with BIVAR LEDs integrated into a crew member's helmet. “In our fueler's helmet is a little circuit board with BIVAR LEDs on it, and then there's a control box that runs those LEDs,” said data engineer Josh Fults. “We can use those LEDs to tell the fueler when to pull the fuel nozzle out of the car.”
Thanks to BIVAR LEDs and the speedy work of his racing team, Kanaan was quick to cross the finish line as the winner of the Indy 500. For more of an accelerated advantage on the track, his team is currently experimenting with different steering wheel projects and considering utilizing LEDs to alert the driver when caution lights are coming on.
