Now here at EP, we’ve shown you all some pretty amazing videos over the course of this year. From technological developments to news stories to projects you’re itching to try out, we’ve given you a lot of footage to think about. So to celebrate the end of a great year for technology, and in honor of EP’s Inspiration Awards—just around the corner!—we’ve compiled this list of the top ten videos you guys found the most interesting:
1. Pilot recreates Asiana 214 crash in stunningly realistic animation
Remember this? We do. Jack Suchocki created pretty amazing animation, especially as it provided essential information for the crash’s investigators. The fact that Suchocki is a former pilot only makes him more awesome.
2. Bladeless windmill generates electricity with no moving parts
The EWICON was definitely an intriguing bit of technology—the world’s first bladeless, noiseless wind electricity generator, complete with an utter dearth of bird deaths. All good things, and certainly compelling to watch.
3. Homemade Lightsaber: 3W Handheld Laser Torching Stuff
As someone who saw Star Wars probably close to nine million times growing up, I always wanted my own Lightsaber. But whether or not you’re a Star Wars fan, what Drake Anthony’s device can do is cool, and you probably want one.
4. Company unveils next generation flying car
While the TF-X is still quite a few years away from actually being made, seeing what Terrafugia has planned for what might actually wind up being the world’s first flying car still made my day.
5. Introducing the Domino’s DomiCopter
DomiCopter revealed the true purpose of drone technology: getting pizza to you as fast as possible. Bad news if you like to flirt with cute pizza delivery boys, but you can console yourself with more pizza.
6. Navy to deploy solid-state laser weaponry aboard ships sooner than expected
Details about the Navy’s Laser Weapon System, or LaWS, are still hazy. But as it’s expected to deploy for the first time at the beginning of the 2014 fiscal year, we might soon have another video showing what this thing can really do.
7. Need to melt some metal? Do it yourself using some wire and electricity
Did you think it was amazing to watch metal melt in mid-air? If you answered no, you probably haven’t watched this video, which is something you should correct immediately.
8. NASA’S SDO captures video of rain on the sun
On July 19th of 2012, the sun put on a show—and thanks to NASA’s SDO atmospheric imaging assembly instrument, we got to see it.
9. The world’s largest LED TV can fit in your backyard
Knowing that you have the power to enjoy crystalline-clear picture quality on a 201-inch LED screen while outside flipping burgers is a comforting feeling.
10. YO! Sushi: The world’s first flying waiter
Sadly, YO! Sushi’s “iTray” has still not made it’s way to the United States. But if you happen to live in England, there’s a chance you could receive your food via flying tray, which is really how it should be.
