Description
Lamp dimmers and their circuits must be compact, energy efficient and able to operate reliably in confined spaces.
Lamp brightness is varied by controlling the conduction time of each half-cycle of mains supply using a simple triac phase control circuit. The conduction time is governed by a capacitor charge-up time which is controlled by an adjustable resistor. Usually to attenuate harmonic currents in the resistive lamp load an inductor is included in addition to the required RFI filter capacitor.
This circuit is a cost effective solution for cost-critical applications. With over 40 years’ R&D experience NXP provides robust triacs for all such requirements in suitable packages for a broad range of domestic and commercial applications.
