TT claims first high-energy double-sided chip resistor

Delivers better surge voltage and pulse power for industrial and medical applications

By Gina Roos, editor-in-chief

TT Electronics expanded its family of pulse-withstanding chip resistors with the introduction of the high-energy double-sided chip (HDSC) resistors for industrial and medical markets. Applications include power supplies, circuit breakers, and medical monitor input protection.

The HDSC chip resistors are untrimmed for improved pulse performance, said TT. The company claims that the HDSC devices are the only double-sided untrimmed chip resistors on the market. The benefits: better surge voltage and pulse power for enhanced surge protection in compact designs.

HDSC resistors can replace large chip or multiple chip solutions that are used to achieve pulse-withstanding, reducing size and weight while increasing surge protection for EMC regulatory compliance. The small footprint — available in four sizes, from 0805 to 2512 — for the given ratings also reduces printed-circuit-board (PCB) area.

Key specs include a withstand up to 6.5 kV peak for a 1.2-/50-µs surge and up to 6 kW for a 0.1-ms pulse. These resistors are designed for protection and discharge applications in power supplies and power control circuits in which a resistance tolerance of 5% is suitable, said TT. Here’s the HDSC datasheet for more information.
