Everybody has at least one favorite gif, no matter how you might pronounce it. Gifs — animated images from news broadcasts, TV shows, movies, and music videos — have grown so popular that making them has turned into an art form. And now, program designers Rachel Binx and Sha Hwang have found a way to turn your favorite gif into a coaster-like card you can hang on your wall or fridge, to look at whenever you like.
The project, called Gifpop! and currently still a campaign on the popular startup site Kickstarter, uses lenticular film to give the coasters the illusion of animation so you can enjoy your favorite gifs offline.
So popular it reached its $5,000 pledge goal on its first day posted to Kickstarter and has now received around $24,000, Gifpop! aims to cater to gif and digital artists, to create an online space for these professionals to sell and promote their work. In their pitch video, Binx and Hwang state that they want Gifpop! to lead to “new avenues for digital artists to make a living.”
Put your favorite gifs on a card
Creating lenticular film is a process developed during the 1940s, something fairly old school to lead to such an innovatively modern project. A lenticular film sheet is made up of tiny prisms that, when viewed at different angles, make it seem like the surface is animated. It’s a technology that was primarily used in 20th century children’s books, toys, or billboards. Each card can play back 10 animated frames of the customer’s choosing.
Eventually, Binx and Hwang wish to create a user-friendly website where cotent can be upload for print onto cards of all sizes. Users will upload their gif to the website prior to production before receiving their printed card. Binx and Hwang are planning on using their excess of funding to set up product production, meaning Gifpop! will hopefully be available for purchase very soon.
