Two-chip IF receiver eases wireless base station design

Parts support emerging 3G standards while also reducing power consumption

A two-chip IF receiver solution consisting of the dual-channel AD8376 VGA and AD6655 IF diversity receiver is presented as improving the data bandwidth and capacity of next-generation multicarrier wireless base station compatible with 3G cellular transmission standards. The chips replace 48 discrete components and reduce power consumption over similar parts.

The AD6655 consumes less than half the power while the AD9376 consumes approximately 25% less per channel than the closest competing device. Both devices increase automatic gain-control loop performance by 100 times over existing options (dropped from 1,600 ns to 16 ns). In addition, each radio channel can handle up to six carriers.

The digitally controlled AD8376 enables a 1-dB gain-step resolution at the highest IFs. Available in 32-lead LFCSP packages, the part features a linearity of OIP3 of 50 dBm at 140 MHz, a bandwidth of 600 MHz, and an independent 5-pin digital interface.

Offered in both 12-bit (AD6653) and 14-bit resolutions, the AD6655 samples at 80, 105, 125, and 150 Msamples/s. Housed in 64-lead LFCSP packages, the part integrates an ultra-low-latency peak detector, an rms signal power monitor, and a 14-bit ADC followed by a digital down converter. (Ea/1,000: AD8376, $6.49; AD6655, $97.50—prod qty, June 2007.)
