Type 1-, 2-compliant PoE PD controller enables new digital power products — Akros Silicon

Power-over-Ethernet is increasingly important to many products including IP phones and cameras, point-of-sale terminals, and RFID readers. The recent introduction of the AS1854 Type 1- and 2-compliant PoE PD controller is an important step for these products because it integrates isolation technology with power conversion technology to deliver groundbreaking power and enable a new range of digital power PoE PD capabilities. The controller is the only PD solution in the industry to integrate 2-kV on-chip digital isolation technology, and has successfully demonstrated compliance with IEEE 802.3at and IEE802.3af standards and multivendor interoperability.

The controller offers quad-output digital power dc/dc converters with minimal external components for systems requiring up to 30-W power capability. The isolation capability enables direct digital management of isolated primary GPIO for real-time green-power application capabilities. The device includes a standard I2 C-based microcontroller interface for advance programmability, monitoring, alarms, diagnostics, and management support. The controller is geared for use in high-power, low-cost systems and can enhance product features and benefits with software programmability, monitoring, and diagnostic features.
