U-blox unveiled its SARA-S520M10L cellular and satellite IoT module that delivers accurate, low-power positioning and ubiquitous connectivity. Designed for asset tracking, fleet management, maritime transportation, mining, utilities and smart agriculture applications, it also has applications in anti-theft systems, industrial monitoring and control and apps that require communication in safety-critical scenarios.
According to u-blox, it is the smallest multi-mode cellular and satellite IoT module currently available. Measuring 400 mm2, it features LTE-M/NB-IoT, L-band satellite connectivity and embedded navigation capability.
The SARA-S520M10L also is pin-compatible with u-blox cellular-only modules in the SARA form factor. The module can provide location fixes using up to four satellite constellations and connectivity through terrestrial cellular networks and geostationary (GEO) satellites. It is the first u-blox module to be designed with the 2nd generation of the u-blox UBX-R5 chip, the UBX-R52/S52, which supports satellite IoT communication alongside LTE-M/NB-IoT cellular standards, providing a multi-mode cellular and satellite modem for connectivity anywhere.
While comparable solutions require two distinct subsystems, one for cellular and one for satellite connectivity, the SARA-S520M10L is built around a single, highly integrated, multi-mode modem SoC, accounting for the smaller size and reduced complexity, u-blox said.
The combination of the SoC and u-blox’s GNSS capability provides a solution for mobile and stationary IoT applications in challenging environments including isolated places. The first samples will be available by Q1 2024.
