Key Features Innovative silicon for a mobile world DA9026-PB04-0705 PROGRAMMABLE LIGHTSHOW AND BACKLIGHT LED DRIVER The DA9026 universal LED controller from Dialog Semiconductor provides ultimate flexibility in driving backlight displays, lightshows and signal LEDs. In a single device it enables total programmability and control of light sequences, patterns and LED intensity of 18 single color LEDs, 6 RGB LEDs or any combination in between. This unique capability is provided without the need for dedicated processing power. The device addresses the increasingly complex illumination requirements of cellphones, handheld gaming and other portable devices. For example in a clamshell form factor, the ability to control 18 LEDs with just two wires across the flip mechanism dramatically improves reliability and lowers cost allowing a simpler flexible PCB to be used. A manufacturer may want to create a lightshow synchronized to music or ringtones, or even to identify different incoming callers. When a portable device is placed in a car the backlight color could be adjusted to match the color and illumination level of a car's dashboard display. These are just a few of many potential applications. The DA9026 incorporates on-chip memory to store up to 15 sequences of light patterns and drive separate red, green and blue (RGB) LEDs using precision current DACs. Programmable variables include pattern, repetition rate, intensity of each LED, start and end points, as well as sequence duration and loop control. Other features of the DA9026 universal LED controller include fading and dimming without needing processor support, and brightness correction for true RGB color. The 4-bit current control enables 4k color options per RGB channel, and the IC is optimized for lithium battery supplies. The device uses a simple two-wire interface to the controller to upload sequence and command data, and has an on-chip oscillator for timing generation. Sequence data is typically pre-loaded on power up to the on- board RAM, so that the only subsequent communication required is to activate the required sequences. A comprehensive PC-based development tool enables the creation and programming of the control code required to generate these sequences. An integrated DC-DC boost converter generates the higher voltages necessary for high intensity blue, green and white LEDs. Quiescent current is minimized through high efficiency operation of this boost converter. It can supply 4.8V at up to a maximum current of 420mA to provide a regulated power source for large display configurations of up to 18 LEDs, with consistent color generation capability for all the LEDs, even as the battery discharges. The DA9026 is packaged in a 24-lead 4*4mm QFN package. 18 individual or 6 RGB LED drivers, or any combination 15 light sequences stored in on- board RAM Programmability for each sequence of: Intensity of each LED Pattern rate Repetition rate Programmable sequence order Dimming and fading Duration and loop control Self-contained IC – no dedicated processing required Key specifications 4k color options, per RGB channel, 4-bit current control Current DAC drivers for constant light output Optimized for lithium battery On-chip boost converter for low voltage operation Small 4*4mm QFN package Applications Lightshow synchronized: Music Ringtones Caller ID Backlight management Clamshell form factors LCD and keypad Lifestyle color matching Flash light / video light Cellphones Handheld games Portable devices Consumer products Toys This publication is issued to provide outline information only, which (unless agreed by Dialog Semiconductor in writing) may not be used, applied or reproduced for any purpose or form part of any order or contract or be regarded as a representation relating to products or services concerned.
