Universal USB battery charger adapts to any power source
Automatic input current limit, dead-battery charging and automatic power source detection meet latest battery charging specifications
The SMB339 programmable battery charger IC suits single-cell Li-ion and Li-polymer powered systems and is compatible with USB 2.0, USB on-the-go, USB battery-charging specification 1.0, IEEE1725 standard, and the Chinese USB charging specification. The device automatically adapts and delivers battery charging from any power source without the software required in typical implementations.
The charger incorporates a 3-MHz switch-mode architecture and uses a proprietary technology for a charging current of 750 mA from a 500-mA USB-source. The automatic power source detection differentiates between a USB 2.0 port and a USB ac/dc adapter. The device features an automatic input current-limit detector that identifies the ac/dc adapter’s maximum current capability from 300 mA for Chinese chargers to more than 1.5 A for USB-type chargers.
The charger can also provide USB On-The-Go (OTG) power support, without the need for additional external components. The device has the ability to reverse its power path when not charging, to supply 5 V and up to 500 mA to VBUS . The chip’s parameters are programmable in nonvolatile and volatile memory for power-up configuration and in-system adjustments via the I2 C host interface. The device operates with an input range from 3.5 to 6.2 V and withstands continuous input overvoltage up to 16 V. ($1.24 ea/10,000 available now.)
