USB 3.0–SATA bridge chip cuts backup times significantly — Fujitsu Microelectronics America
USB 3.0 is here. USB 3.0 (SuperSpeed) runs at 5 Gbits/s — 10 times faster than 2.0. While some companies have pushed back USB SuperSpeed introduction, others are forging ahead and motherboards and external disk drives are available now.
The MB86C30A USB 3.0–SATA Bridge IC from Fujitsu leads the charge in the important area of data backup with a USB 3.0 PHY, a 2.0 PHY, and a 3.0-Gbit/s SATA PHY. This chip can cut backup times significantly and will be used with HDD, SSD, DVD, and CD storage devices. It was the first 3.0/SATA chip, though others have since announced product intent or testing of similar devices.
The Fujitsu IC also features an embedded Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) engine for automatic data protection and a 32-bit RISC MPU. The 64-pin LQFP packaged chip costs about $10 in sample quantity. For a data center using SATA for a five-hour-long backup every night, this new technology can potentially cut that to about an hour — saving lots of energy and improving vital network up time.
