USB connectors come in two waterproof versions

Hirose has extended its family of waterproof USB connectors for consumer, industrial, and automotive applications with IPX8 and IPX4-rated versions.

Hirose Electric USA has expanded its CX90 series of waterproof USB 2.0 Type-C connectors with the introduction of two new rugged variants: the IP8X-rated CX90MW6 mid-mount and IPX4-rated CX90BW top-mount. These USB connectors can be used in a range of consumer, industrial, and automotive applications.

The waterproof connectors include a front sealing gasket that prevents water penetration into the shell while potting keeps water from entering the connector interior. The IPX8-rated CX90MW6 mid-mount connector meets the requirements for immersion in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. The IPX4-rated CX90BW top-mount connector protects from splashing water. Both connectors also are resistant to shock and vibration.

The CX90MW6 mid-mount connector measures 15.92-mm wide with a depth of 7.73 mm and height of 4.11 mm with the gasket. The CX90BW top mount connector offers a width of 10.50 mm, a depth of 6.30 mm, and a height of 3.82 mm with the gasket.

The CX90 Series connectors offer a current rating of 6 A and combine quick USB charging with rugged performance. These waterproof USB 2.0 Type-C connectors support data rates up to 480 Mbits/s. The CX90 connectors offer a right-angle, SMT, single-row mounting option, while the CX90MW6 Series mid-mount uses a screw-mount design.

These connectors feature a symmetrical mating design that allows for reversible plug insertion. They also use a a plug stopper to prevent direct force applied to the insulator during plug insertion, protecting the insulator.

The CX90 Series waterproof connectors are used in a variety of applications, such as digital cameras, IoT, laptops, MP3 players, medical devices, portable storage devices, smart phones, tablets, wearables, and vehicle infotainment systems. They are particularly suited to portable and consumer products that are often subjected to fluids and drop impacts and require quick charging, said the company.
