While USB Type-C has only been mentioned in passing as a future technology, Google has formally announced that smartphones running Android M with USB Type-C ports can now be used to recharge other smartphones.
It goes without saying that the potential for this technology is huge, and that what’s being described here is the future of connectivity.
These phones come with a two-way USB Type-C cable that essentially gives users the capability of sharing power to a friend with a “dying” smartphone. In addition, smartwatches could adopt USB Type-C ports instead of using dedicated charging to docks to be recharged from a smartphone when low on power.
In addition to providing power, USB Type-C ports can also be used to output video and transfer data.
Looking down the road, this new technology will provide a ton of convenience for users — there will no longer be a need to carry around an external battery pack, nor will users need to scan walls in search of an empty outlet. Instead, simply asking a friend for a quick recharge will be all that’s needed (so long as they’re okay with draining some of the power from their device to charge up a dying device).
