Now, at some point in your life you’ve probably finished a book—say, The Hobbit by J.J.R. Tolkien—sat down, and went “Yeah, I bet I could do that.” And sure, if you’re as plucky as Mr. Bilbo Baggins (not to mention accompanied by a few dwarves determined to reclaim their homeland come orcs or elves and Gandalf ), I bet you could outsmart mountain trolls, out-riddle Golem, fight off some orcs, and probably take down Smaug when you eventually find yourself at the door to Erebor. You only face one problem, really: how do you get inside?
Well, thanks to Warner Bros’ partnership with Microsoft Advertising, that’s no longer a hurdle on your quest. Microsoft Advertising has created blueprints for the Key to Erebor, allowing fans the ability to download and create their very own Hobbit memorabilia by harnessing the frankly awesome power of 3D printing. Using Microsoft’s in-App creative, fans of Tolkien’s tales will be able to connect the blueprints for the Key to any 3D printer, letting them create their own little piece of the story right at home.
Better get a move on Thorin; I have a key now and all that gold will probably help pay off my student loans.
The Key’s blueprints will be available for download the day of the movie's premiere, with the campaign also providing information about the film’s key characters and artifacts, as well as actor bios and behind-the-scenes footage. Microsoft Advertising an Online UK general manager Owen Sagness believes their accompanying movie campaign sheds new light on the advertising game by putting “the consumer first, while continuing to deliver for the client and push the boundaries of what is creatively possible using new technology. “
By providing this unique experience to the consumer, Microsoft’s campaign hopes to increase ticket sales for the Hobbit—which really, like it needs the extra push—by driving consumers to the film’s website. And as the only thought in my head upon hearing the news was: “I get to make my own key to Erebor?!! Now I just have to get past Smaug. Ooh, behind the scenes footage!” I think their success speaks for itself.
See you guys December 13 for the premiere! I’ll be making my key into a necklace.
